From the Vicarage - September 2011

FROM SUE CARTER Stephen's slow progress following surgery has been maintained now he is out of intensive care. He has moved from walking with the aid of a frame to using one stick and he can also successfully negotiate a flight of stairs. His main frustration at present is that, due to some damage to one of his vocal chords, he is unable to swallow correctly. This is causing fluids to go into his lungs rather than his stomach so even small sips of water are a problem. Doctors believe that this will be rectified in time so for now he continues to be tube fed. He remains on the ward until 30th August where he is undergoing physio and speech therapy. He will then be transferred to the rehabilitation unit in the same hospital where he will have a two week assessment and this will be followed by work to improve his fitness for several weeks before he will be allowed home. This long job looks like going well into September. Obviously Stephen is feeling frustrated but at the same time he is optimistic and as cheerful as one can be under trying conditions. he once again sends his thanks for your prayers, cards and good wishes.
